The Five Therapeutic Focus Areas

New Leaf Academy addresses five areas of competency supporting girls to become competent and successful in these five areas. They are Life skills, Emotion Regulation, Healthy Relationships, Academics and Self Development. While mastering success in these areas can be a lifelong pursuit it is the goal of New Leaf Academy to support girls in becoming sufficient enough in these areas so they can continue their growth in a non-therapeutic setting

The New Leaf Academy Program focuses on five areas of healthy adolescent development. They are:

  1. Life Skills
  2. Emotion Regulation
  3. Healthy Relationships
  4. Academics
  5. Self-Development

We use a strengths-based approach to address behavioral, emotional, academic, and mental health struggles.

1. Life Skills consists of:

  • Proper Self Care (hygiene, recreation, coping skills)
  • Strong communication skills
  • Social Thinking
  • Goal Setting
  • Organizational Skills
  • Preparing for adulthood
  • Adapting well to family culture
  • Fulfilling personal responsibilities in a community setting

We achieve through:

  • Individual, group and family therapy
  • Milieu living
  • Psychoeducation
  • Intentional academic instruction
  • Extracurricular activities
  • Intentional Instruction

These skills will:

  • Decrease anxiety and other feelings of distress or inadequacy
  • Increase personal sense of wellness and efficacy
  • Improve relationships
  • Improve academic performance

2. Emotion Regulation consists of:

  • Managing mood swings
  • Decreased depression and anxiety
  • Tolerating distress
  • Expressing feelings appropriately
  • Processing debilitating trauma or grief
  • Communicating and dealing with feelings appropriately with the family

  • Psychoeducation
  • Positive Peer culture
  • Teaching coping skills
  • Emotional Recover Time (HHC)
  • Medication Management
  • Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) skills and practice
  • EMDR

  • A varieity of theoretical therapeutic interventions (DBT, EMDR, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Art Therapy, Attachment Based Interventions, Narrative Therapy and Social Learning Theory)

3. Healthy Relationships consists of:

4. Academics consists of:

  • Organizational skills and time management
  • High quality of academic work
  • Meet or exceed grade level expectations
  • Developing a lifelong love for learning
  • Understanding of individual learning styles and unique needs in an academic setting
  • Taking personal responsibility for self in an academic setting
  • Self-advocacy

We achieve this through:

  • Skill based class groupings
  • Individualized curriculums, as needed, which may include specific accommodations and modifications
  • Teaching organizational skills, effective study habits and time management
  • Integrating academics and therapeutics (teachers work as part of the treatment team)
  • Individual Academic Plans
  • Exploration, understanding of and advocating for one’s own unique learning style

5. Self-Development consists of:
